Eugene Wall Obituary

Eugene “Gene” J. Wall, 95, of La Grange, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 17, 2024. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Jacob and Mary (nee Novak) Wall.

Gene is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Evelyn (nee Romanowski) Wall; his cherished children Eileen (Randy Hill) Wall, Earl Wall, and Elliott (Kristine) Wall; and his treasured grandchildren Mallory Wall and Elliott Tyler Wall. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Raymond Wall, Ervin Wall, Dorothy Dombro, and Florence Gasior.

Gene's extraordinary talent for analyzing and sketching complex mechanical machines was evident from a young age. His artistic gift first emerged in the portraits he painted during his high school years, earning him a full scholarship with encouragement from his mother and their priest.

After graduating from Kelly High School in 1948, Gene's college education was interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army. He served overseas in the Korean War, managing the design and construction of bridges and bunkers. Upon returning home, he completed his degree and graduated from the American Academy of Art.

Gene enjoyed a distinguished 28-year career as a Mechanical Engineer at Motorola, where he was awarded over nine patents for his contributions to the Cell Phone division.

Upon retirement, Gene pursued his passion for boating, becoming the proud owner of the 40-foot Aqua Snooper. For 25 years, his boat was docked at the Hammond Marina on Lake Michigan, where he delighted in hosting friends and family for day trips and weekend getaways. Docking downtown for the 4th of July weekend was a particular highlight, and his guest list included a vast array of family and friends, all of whom hold fond memories of their time aboard the Aqua Snooper.

Gene continued to paint portraits well into his later years, leaving behind a legacy of dozens of beautiful works that reflect his enduring love for art. To his grandchildren, he was affectionately known as Mr. Fix-It, and to all who knew him, he was a captivating storyteller and a music lover, a trait especially appreciated by his neighbors.

A memorial service to celebrate Gene's life will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2024 from 1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M., at 146 N. Drexel Ave., La Grange, IL 60525.

Gene's warmth, creativity, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
