Jean M. Cherway (December 2, 1928 – July 25, 2021)
Jean M. Cherway passed on to her eternal reward surrounded by her family in her home. She was predeceased by her husband John whom she married in 1950. They were married for 28 years. She was the daughter of Frank and Ivana (Stopar) Zupančič and the sister of Frank Zupan and Elizabeth Austin all of whom also predeceased her. She was the loving mother of Denise (Ken Hoytt), Diane (James Nichols) and Dawn (John P. Vidmar). She was the adored grandmother of Brent (Nikki), Michael (Elizabeth), Ashley (Jason), Bridget (Jessie), Joseph (Natalia), Brittany (Steve), Casey (Jason) and Monika (Jason) and 15+ great grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of many Slovenian organizations. She was most active in Pioneer Lodge #559 of SNPJ serving in many capacities including president. She spent most of her working career employed with the Home Office of SNPJ, first in their original Lawndale headquarters and then in Burr Ridge. She retired when SNPJ moved to Pennsylvania. Her main assignment was circulation and advertising sales which brought her into contact with many members scattered across the USA. For years she served as the unofficial photographer at the annual SloveneFest at the SNPJ Recreation Center in Pennsylvania. She and her husband John were founding members of the Slovene Center in Cicero on 35th St. and she supported it to the day that it was sold. She was also a lifelong member of SUA/SWUA #2 as well as KSKJ St. Stephen #1. Later in life she joined the Slovenian Pensioners and became an officer there as well. She was an expert at Roberts Rules of Order. A lifelong member of St. Stephen, including being a choir member as a young adult, she transferred her parish membership to the Slovenian Catholic Mission when St. Stephen was closed. She was a member of the Slovenian Catholic Mission at the time of her death.
Jean was an avid reader and frequent visitor to the Brookfield library throughout her adult life. She was known for her cooking, claiming to have captured husbands for her daughters through her kitchen. An avid baker, she relished spending time with her granddaughters teaching them her recipes. Her love of music ranged from symphony orchestra and opera to listening to her husband and his buddies play Cleveland Style Polka. Each of her children and grandchildren teased her about being her favorite and they were each in their own unique way.
Mass of Resurrection will be on July 31st, 10:15am at the Slovenian Catholic Mission, St. Mary’s Monastery, 14252 Main St., Lemont IL 60439. Visitation will be held from 9:00am until the beginning of the funeral liturgy in St. Mary’s Chapel in the Monastery. Committal will be at Woodlawn Cemetery following services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Friends of St. Mary’s, PO Box 634, Lemont, IL 60439. This is the foundation that supports the maintenance of the monastery grounds.
