Susan "Susie" Ann (Mladic) Engels

Susan Ann (Mladic) Engels, affectionately known as “Susie” - a caring mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and friend - passed on from this world on Friday, October 15, 2021 in hospice outside of Chicago, IL after a valiant decade long fight against Alzheimer’s.

Susie was born January 27, 1950 to Victor and Ann (Grill) Mladic of Chicago and was a member of a large and beloved family. She loved her Slovenian heritage and belonged to both St. Stephens parish and the American Slovenian Union Of America.  

Susie was a determined woman holding her own against 5 brothers with a sense of humor. She was a loyal friend, well known for her devotion for her children and family, and commitment to her job.  Her life’s passion was being a nurse, and she spent her career in ICU/CCU and PACU as a RN - with over 35 years spent working at Fairview Hospital in Bloomington MN. As an Avid gardener she was honored to be a part of a Minnesota Summer Garden tour. 

Susie was the proud Mother to 3 children and is survived by Annie Engels Barsch (Peter Barsch), Joseph Engels (Robyn Staurovsky), Victoria Engels (Boris Wexler) as well as her 5 brothers – Victor (Sheree), James (Virginia), Richard (Julie), Robert (Pat), and William "Harpo" (Janet) Mladic. She has eight grandchildren – Samuel, Nathaniel, Lucas, Raphael, Noah, Benjamin, Vivienne, and Sophie. She is preceded in death by her parents Victor and Ann Mladic, and her sister Elizabeth (Betty) Lany. 

She will be dearly missed by her family and friends, and her laughter and spirit will live on through the telling of stories at many family gatherings, all while enjoying potica and slivovitz. 

Family and friends are welcomed to gather Tuesday October 19, 2021 for an 11:00am Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Immaculate Parish 15629 South Route 59 Plainfield, Il. Interment: Resurrection Cemetery 7200 Archer Rd. Justice, Il. In lieu of flowers the family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to the American Nurses Foundation P.O.Box 504342 St. Louis, MO., 63150-4342.
