Virgil Fred Grewe

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Virgil Fred Grewe, a beloved brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who peacefully departed this world on his 85th birthday, August 19, 2025.

Virgil is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Carol, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, dedication, and adventure. Together, they found great joy in traveling, exploring the beauty of the world hand in hand, and capturing landscapes near and far through Virgil’s lens. His photos reflected his appreciation for nature’s quiet majesty and the special moments they experienced along the way.

Virgil’s life was a testament to quiet dedication, steady loyalty, and simple joys. He was a man who found peace in the everyday—tending his garden and lawn with care, solving puzzles with patient determination, and taking pride in his home and cars.  Whether he was cheering on a child or grandchild from the sidelines, tending to his backyard, patiently training his beloved parakeets—affectionately named 'Fritzy'—or rooting for his favorite teams, the Chicago Bears and Chicago White Sox, Virgil lived a life deeply rooted in tradition, loyalty, and love.

He leaves behind a legacy of tradition, strength, and family values. Virgil was the proud father of five children: Dennis (Debbie), Scott (Maria), Amy (Rich), Kim, and Heather (Tim). His love extended to his grandchildren—Bryan (Shauna), Katie, Jacob (Cecelia), Jerad, Melissa, Megan, Peter, Gabby, Madison, and Emily—and to his great-grandchildren: Regan, Quade, Hunter, Logan (Tarah), Brycen, Addison, Eloraina, Ottiline, and Viviann.

Virgil had an unmistakable presence. He taught those around him the value of hard work, independence, loving your family and home through dedication, effort and loyalty.

Though he has passed, Virgil’s memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration to those who knew him. His memory lives on in the blooming of a well-tended flower bed, a shiny clean vehicle, and the roar of a Sunday football game.

A private family service will be held to honor Virgil’s life and legacy.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to spend time with loved ones, tend to your garden, or simply enjoy a quiet moment in honor of a man who cherished all three.

Rest in peace, Virgil. You were deeply loved, and you will be dearly missed.
