William Walter Vogel died of cancer at the age of 78 on April 30, 2017 at his home in Riverside, Illinois. Bill was born to August and Willa Vogel on March 21, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan. His childhood years were spent in Clayton, Missouri. Bill met the love of his life, Victoria Sue Kappelmann, in Washington, Missouri and they were married 56 years. Bill was a quintessential businessman, working in sales and manufacturing throughout his life. He was the owner of DeCardy Diecasting, a family business in which all of his children participated. He culminated his career as an industrial coordinator and mentor to youth at Austin Polytechnical Academy High School in the city of Chicago. Bill was a dedicated member of his church, Riverside Presbyterian, serving many roles as a member over the course of 43 years.
Bill was a loving father of six children, Will (Susanne) Vogel, Henry (Debbie) Vogel, Ginger (Keith) Schander, Ann Vogel (Tim Heilenbach), Rachel Vogel (Mike Forseth), and Amanda (Paul) Wright. He had 17 grandchildren and one great-grandson, all of whom he adored, was a caring uncle to Henry, Hugh, and Harley Gerdes and brother-in-law to Kay Kappelmann and Karla Becker. Bill was the very proud patriarch of his larger than life family. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Susan.
Bill was guided by his ongoing intellectual curiosity, love of reading, and the arts. He will be remembered for his passion for people. He believed in celebrating life with his family and friends, enjoyed a drive on a country road, and the benefits of a good nap. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the Riverside Presbyterian Church. Visitation at 10 am and service at 11 am. Memorial tributes may be made to the Riverside Presbyterian Church, 116 Barrypoint Road, Riverside, IL 60546.
