Wymond Burroughs Obituary

***All services will be held in Halls, Tennessee***

The Burroughs Family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of their patriarch, Wymond Eugene “Gene” Burroughs.

Gene, age 90, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, March 7, 2025, with his beloved wife, Lois, and family at his side.

Gene was born at home on December 21, 1934, in Barr, Tennessee.  He was the son of Claude H. and Elvie L. (nee Freeman) Burroughs.  Gene was raised in Barr, Tennessee, a small farming community that was owned by the Burroughs, Hardy, Kissell, and other families.  Growing up, Gene worked with his father on the farm; he built a strong work ethic and took pride in helping his family.  He also enjoyed having corn cob wars with the other boys, riding horses, roller skating, and going into town to see movies - especially Cowboy movies.  Gene learned how to play the fiddle at a young age and was able to share his love of bluegrass music with his siblings who played various instruments.

Gene married the love of his life, Lois Hardy, whom he had known since childhood, on November 7, 1953, in Hernando, Mississippi.  They soon started a family and relocated to the Chicagoland area, where they would raise four children.  Gene worked as a truck driver over the next four decades and was very proud to have driven over two million miles without an accident.  Upon retirement in 2000, he and Lois returned to their home state of Tennessee and built a beautiful ranch home on twenty-three acres in Halls.

Gene is survived by his beloved wife of over 71 incredible years, Lois (nee Hardy) Burroughs; his children Gwendolyn (William) Straka, Cynthia (Michael) Goodof, and Michael (Barbara) Burroughs; his grandchildren Bill (Mari), Trinity (Tim), Christopher (Lisa), Nicholas (Amy), Amanda (Keith), Timothy (Stephanie), Kristin (Kyle), Kara (Andrew), Bradley (Megan), Joshua, and Abigail; his nineteen great grandchildren; and his siblings John (Margo) Burroughs, Sam (the late Patsy) Burroughs, and Bernice Bryce.

He is preceded in death by his parents Claude and Elvie; his sons Wymond Burroughs, Jr., who passed away shortly after birth, and Loren (Janice) Burroughs; and his siblings Elmer (Juanita) Burroughs, Claude (Dean) Burroughs, Edytha (Sonny) McElligott, Jerry (Joan) Burroughs, and Roger Burroughs.

Everyone who knew Gene knew he was a God-fearing, hardworking man, who would do anything for his family.  Gene’s faith in God was extremely important to him and he instilled that same faith in his children and grandchildren.  Throughout their lives, Gene, Lois, and the family attended church on a weekly basis and built strong, lifelong bonds with the other parishioners in their congregation.  They have been parishioners at the First Baptist Church of Halls since returning to Tennessee in 2000.

Gene was selfless, kindhearted, caring, and generous.  He leaves behind a profound legacy and many cherished memories that will be forever in our hearts.  He will be missed tremendously and thought of often.
